Subsequent Harvests/Thinnings
Like the second thinning, the plantation operations that follow generally occur on a 15-year schedule, but this depends on specific site conditions and the growth of trees. These harvests are also “selection thinnings” and at this stage, conifer species are selected for removal over hardwood/deciduous species. Some coniferous trees will be left to provide habitat for many species and for migratory birds to use for navigation.
These subsequent thinnings help the plantation transition into a more natural looking, mixed forest.
