Why Does GSCA Harvest Trees?
GSCA has practiced sustainable forest management for many years, carefully harvesting trees to provide a wide range of valuable forest products. While lumber and paper are well-known examples, forest products also include food, building materials, toys, musical instruments, and packaging, all of which highlight the economic importance of our renewable forests.
Forest management at GSCA focuses on improving overall forest health by removing poor-quality and diseased trees first. Although these trees often have lower economic value, their removal helps limit the spread of fungi and disease to healthier trees. Some trees with defects or disease are intentionally left standing to provide critical habitat for wildlife, eventually decomposing and returning nutrients to the soil.
Harvesting also helps increase safety for recreational users by removing hazardous trees near trails during operations.
